Ready or not, here comes spring. Of course, I know we're all ready for it; it's spring that has been having a hard time making the schedule. But in the past week the crocuses and daffodils have made a hasty entry, especially where the sun shines, and green is flooding the open spaces. Time for Green Day.
This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Monona Terrace, Isthmus will stage the seventh edition of our annual eco-fest. It's evident from this week's issue in two ways: the cover story and the inserted Green Day Guide. Denise Thornton does the honors with the cover story, "Our Dream Green House," taking the reader through the experience she and her husband had planning and building an earth-friendly domicile in southern Wisconsin.
The Green Day Guide is your handbook for navigating the event on April 26. It is also informative reading for its own sake. It has the schedule, the exhibitors' booth layout, descriptions of the various presentations and special programming, and introductions to our two keynote speakers, Naomi Davis and Shalini Kantayya.
Davis, hailing from Chicago's South Side, is a founder of Blacks in Green. She's a proponent of the urban villages concept who sees food self-sufficiency, among other things, as empowering to those whom society has dispossessed. Kantayya, producer of a lauded film about water scarcity, will talk about how every place in the world has some sort of water issue, and how the pressure on water supplies will only increase.
The exhibitors will offer many entries into the world of sustainability, from the pillars of our energy infrastructure, like our sponsor Madison Gas and Electric, to retailers who market with a green consciousness, like Century House, another of our sponsors.
