As you can see from the cover, this week we announce the honorees of the second annual Isthmus Independent Business Awards, sponsored by Heartland Credit Union. We call them the Indies for obvious reasons, but we're recognizing these people because they have not taken a shortcut to sound business practices, honoring the environment or contributing to the community. The choices were made by a committee including past winners and representatives of Heartland Credit Union, and chaired by Isthmus creative director Ellen Meany.
The awards come in eight categories: Heartland Artist, representing the creative class; Neighborhood Notable, a leader in the neighborhood; Bridge Builder, someone who makes the community stronger by forging connections within it; Dane and Beyond, using new means to project Dane County beyond its borders; Market Spark, using innovative methods to achieve sustainable success; Fresh Food Friend, demonstrating that you are how you eat; Green Angel, facilitating green practices in business; and Dynamic Developer, building with awareness. The profiles were written by staff with the aid of interns Andrew Averill and Pam Selman.
The group will be recognized at Steenbock's on Orchard, the classy eatery in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (330 N. Orchard St.), on Monday, Nov. 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A light supper will be served and cocktails available. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Tickets are $25 and available at the Isthmus office, 101 King St., or by phone at 251-5627 or online at indies@isthmus.com.
Be advised that the countdown is beginning for two other Isthmus events. This year's version of Band to Band Combat launches on TheDailyPage.com today. Thirty-five bands are at the starting line; four will appear in the live performance finals at the Frequency on Dec. 15.
It's never too early for the Beer & Cheese Fest, Isthmus' popular pairing of grain and dairy scheduled for Jan. 21. Check out details at isthmus.com/beercheese. Tickets to this event would make an excellent holiday gift for that certain person. You know who they are.
