It's a short week for us, as is the case for all. Thus we spring our program on you on a Wednesday. I hope we didn't catch you unprepared. At least now you have something to entertain yourself with as you process that Thanksgiving meal.
Because we anticipated the time crush this week - no great trick, as we've faced this same problem for each of the last 37 Thanksgivings and figured it out a long time ago - we prepared for an in-the-can cover feature, our now annual photo contest. This year's theme was pets, so gaze upon many a furry visage within our pages as a result. We allotted the space from both our news and entertainment features in order to show more of your timeless photography. More pet photos exist in a slide show at isthmus.com.
Beyond that accommodation for the holiday, we have news, entertainment and comestible reporting as usual. We're tracking the city council agenda in the news section; analyzing Paul Soglin's plans to become a music impresario; checking out fall dishes. And Jim Schwall turns 70! Andy Moore reports.
This year's Thanksgiving comes about as early as it can. With the holiday designated as the fourth Thursday in November, this is what we get when Nov. 1 is a Thursday. Next year we get the other extreme: Thanksgiving is on the 28th of November, as late as it can be. Double-whammy - the 28th is also Hanukkah. (This year Hanukkah is on Dec. 9.)
Now that I've illumined the mysteries of the holiday calendar, it is only left to wish you and your family a peaceful and congenial Thanksgiving. It's time to contemplate what we have, not what we are without. I know that I am grateful and gratified with my lot, and I hope you can say the same. Life is a gift we are fortunate to possess.
