Although the Associated Press and Wispolitics have reported that Democrats and Republicans in the Assembly have struck a deal on limiting the debate, Minority Leader Peter Barca insists Democrats were instead issued an ultimatum, and that his party is continuing debate for as long as possible. From his statement:
Republican leadership said that only one additional amendment per Democratic Assembly member would be allowed. The only other option they presented was to cut off debate entirely. Assembly Democrats will continue to debate and have been working to prioritize remaining amendments so that we can make the best case on behalf of Wisconsin's working families.
Democrats are upset by how their choice has been characterized in the AP, the Journal Sentinel and Wispolitics, and say the GOP is just describing the resolution as an agreement so that they can appear willing to compromise. Bizarre.
