Finally, a reliable poll that asks the right questions about the issues Wisconsin and many other states are facing.
A Gallup survey shows that Americans are unwilling to commit on any single action to address the budget gaps that plague local governments across the nation. However, over 60 percent believe that eliminating collective bargaining rights for public employees is not the way to go. The only group that supports such a plan is Republicans (54 percent). In contrast, 62 percent of independents and 78 percent of Democrats are opposed.
To the GOP's credit, their voters are the only ones who express somewhat consistent preferences. They are opposed to raising taxes, but support reducing spending on state programs and cutting the pay and benefits of public workers. Democrats and independents are against raising taxes as well as against cuts to government services.
Meanwhile, Democrats here are trumpeting a poll that shows most Wisconsin voters opposed to Walker's plan. I had the sheet of paper around here...I will find it and report later.
