The city of Madison has announced two dates, and two completely different routes, for Ride the Drive in 2012, one downtown on June 3 and one on the north side on Aug. 12. The free community event, now in its fourth year, closes off streets to cars, opening the way for bikers, walkers and rollerbladers.
Ride the Drive became controversial last year when recently re-elected Mayor Paul Soglin canceled the September edition. Soglin said that downtown stores and restaurants complained that the event disrupted business.
Alders cried foul, and Soglin had a change of heart after attending the Ride the Drive held on June 5. The second event ended up being held on Sept. 25. (Watch a slideshow of the event.)
Ride the Drive has drawn between 20,000 to 50,000 people over the last three years. It includes music, food and various activities for families.
