Homelessness is a much more visible and despairing phenomenon in the wintertime, and Madison is no exception. Sivakumar Karur Shanmugam produced a short documentary about the issue, examining the situation for homeless persons in Madison and the services available to them. He focuses particularly on the status of persons who are homeless over the long-term, eliciting suggestions from local service providers for better solutions for the issue.

There are numerous organizations in Madison dedicated to providing shelter and services to the city's homeless and transient population. All of them are perpetually in need themselves of greater support and funding from the broader community. One of these groups is Savory Sundays, a fourteen-month old program that provides hot and nutritious foods for Madison's homeless every Sunday afternoon. The group is holding a benefit show at the King Club on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Featured performers include Marvin's Garden, Chef Boy R Beats, Blue Owl, Earl Foss' Brown Derby, Vinnie Toma, and Ricundou, with all attendees encouraged to open their pantries and bring non-perishable food items for the benefit.
