For many movie lovers, summer in Madison wouldn't be complete without the UW Cinematheque and its free screenings in June, July and August. All of this season's films will be shown on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays at 7 p.m., at either the Chazen Museum of Art or the Marquee Theater at Union South. French New Wave classics and scream-worthy monster movies abound on the schedule, which includes season opener They Live (Chazen, June 19), Alphaville (Marquee, June 28), the original Godzilla (Marquee, July 4) and Je T'Aime Je T'Aime (Chazen, July 24).

Saturday, June 21, 7 p.m., Marquee
Charlotte Gainsbourg continues the erotic legacy of her dad, singer Serge, in Lars von Trier's daring new film about a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac. The New Yorker called it "a pornographic work of art," while NPR praised its ability to provoke laughter. Both volumes will be screened consecutively.
The Double
Friday, July 11, 7 p.m., Marquee
Though Richard Ayoade is best known for portraying hilarious characters on The I.T. Crowd and other British television shows, many Americans know him as the writer-director of the 2010 coming-of-age drama Submarine. His sophomore feature, inspired by Dostoyevsky's novella of the same name, stars Jesse Eisenberg as a man who meets his doppelganger. Ayoade gives the story a modern sci-fi treatment, and his signature dark humor is in full force.
