Some Madison bands have long been politically involved, but the union protests dominating the city's 2011 news cycle have highlighted the local music scene's activism.
Take Bonobo Secret Handshake. The Madison blues band have been around since 2007. They've consistently described themselves as politically charged and socially motivated. But their recent concert for worker justice at the Harmony Bar illuminated their efforts even more.
The nine-piece band's January CD release features a mix of original and cover songs that feel as passionate as the band's advocacy. The best track is "Spring," a melodic song that contrasts raspy, heartfelt vocals with the catchy interplay of keyboard, sax and drums. The song ventures beyond blues, embracing acoustic pop.
Never mind if the doors of the Capitol are locked. This music is sure to make you feel that justice will prevail.
