In 1992, R&B divas En Vogue urged listeners to fight prejudice in "Free Your Mind," a saucy hit featuring the chorus from George Clinton's "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow." Now Cut Copy are telling their fans to free their minds, too. But will asses follow?
The Aussie act isn't talking about prejudice or twerking, though dancing is a likely side effect. The title track rolls out Moby-esque house beats and grooves that remind me of "Good Vibrations," the 1991 rump-shaker by Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch. Posteriors aren't mentioned, nor are politics. Instead, this is a cheesy inspirational number with a call to "reach for the sky." You may giggle while listening, but good luck sitting still.
The group revisit the ethereal electronics of 2008's In Ghost Colours on "We Are Explorers," then explore folky byways with warm guitars and airy falsettos on "Dark Corners & Mountain Tops." Sounding like a club remix of the Stone Roses, "Take Me Higher" is my favorite but also a reminder that Cut Copy aren't cutting edge.
