Fambly Fun! have carved out their own little corner of the Madison music scene. It's a place where hip-hop, pop and electronica collide. Fambly Fun! don't take themselves seriously. After all, this is a band that is most comfortable with no fixed lineup and has members with names like C.D. Sandwich and Turkey Boy.
Songs like "It Speaks" define this 15-track album. Running 100 seconds long, the track begins with percussive electronics that give way to a spoken-word rant about the creature that "never asked to be made," a unicorn.
It's not that Fambly Fun! can't get melodic. They prove that much on "Clawed, not Jawed," in which circus parade sounds meet guitar and horn samples. Singing ends just as the raps begin.
Fambly Fun! enlist the city's best-known street musician, Art Paul Schlosser, to open their CD with a dramatic reading. The band thrives on the idea that irreverence about musical conventions is the framework for an original sound.
