When the temperature drops below 32 degrees, many music fans cozy up at home. Local DJ Wyatt Agard wants to halt this hibernation with a dance party to make Madison swelter. To accomplish this mission, he's bringing in Milwaukee DJ Chris Grant and Madison tune-slingers Eurotic (a.k.a. Caustic's Matt Fanale) and VON. I spoke with Grant and Agard about the event, electroLUST 2, which takes place Friday, Jan. 6, at the Majestic Theatre.
What is electroLUST 2 about?
Agard: With the explosion of DJ culture over the last two years, people can see DJs play every night of the week, even in a smaller market like Madison. ElectroLUST 2 is about [using] the fantastic stage at the Majestic for a theatrical set design and Vegas-style entertainment - something really over the top.
Is it an all-electro party?
Agard: I expect to hear a dubstep and moombahton set from VON and an industrial-inspired dance set by Eurotic. I'll be playing a set that goes from tribal sounds to the electro house that's popular right now.
Grant: I play techno and a bit of dubstep, [like] a mixture of Chris Liebing and Feed Me. There's a lot of real mixing and effectual flair. I tend to let tracks blend for half the song before mixing one out.
Tell me a little bit about your approach for choosing music for this event.
Grant: All of my selections are on the fly. It depends on how the crowd is reacting.
Agard: I don't go into shows with 100% predefined set lists, but I will build a list of five to 10 songs that I use to set the tone. I try to tell a story with the hour I'm given.
The Majestic's description of the event says "dress to impress." What's the most impressive getup you've seen while DJing?
Grant: A horse head.
Agard: The stilt walkers and dragon riders at the Willy Street Fair. The creativity of this town will never stop amazing me.
