Today's highlighted Madison musical group is Crimson Vim.
Drawing from a venerable fountain of influences, Crimson Vim creates music that's contemporary, but also built with an oldies to classic rock foundation and styled with elements of garage, funk and wooly guitar power pop. Here's how the band describes its foundation:
Crimson Vim is a Madison based band who draws influences from modern rock to alternative rock to classic rock. Lead vocalist Erik Kjelland (formerly of Fallen Roadies) and bass guitarst Nick Fry (formerly of Middletown and Envy) joined forces to create music that fits in with modern music yet reflects the artists' other musical experiences. Lead guitarist Chad Thompson (of Baghdad SCUBA Review) was added to the group and quickly poured his electro-fried groove into the stew. Finally a rhythm master stepped out of the shadows with a jazz and punk background in the form of drummer Brad Reuber (formerly of Section 8).
With roots in Platteville and currently based in Madison, Crimson Vim has issued three releases. These are their High Walls EP, a live album recorded in July 2005, and their 2006 full-length release, From Paradise to Here. Four of their songs are available for listening on their MySpace page: "Someone," "Coaster Ride," "Hands on My Face," and "Stew," all of which are drawn from their recent album. The group only has one upcoming show in the Madison area. On Friday, Oct. 20, Crimson Vim will be performing at the Annex with opening sets from All Envy Aside and Oxford. Their other currently listed show is set for Monday, Nov. 22 in Rockford.
