Today's highlighted Madison musician is Josh Harty.
One of the city's increasingly respected and recognized singer-songwriters, Josh Harty is building a reputation both for his brand of folky, country blues and his skills with the acoustic guitar. Here's how the musician describes himself in his registry biography:
Josh Harty is a product of American music; insightful and poingnant-introspective and exploritive-rich and earthy. All this comes through his crisp, emotive guitar coupled with warm, smokey vocals that settle comfortably into each listener's ear.
Harty moved to Madison after spending the bulk of his life in Fargo, and between his spells in North Dakota and Wisconsin, is creating a name for himself as a singer-songwriter throughout the Upper Midwest. Three of Harty's songs are available on his MySpace page: "Country Song," "Empire Bar," and "Where Did I Go Wrong." A fourth song -- "Minna Miller" from the Magnolia Recording Company -- can be found on that label's MySpace page.
Harty released his debut album in 2003. Titled Three Days Notice, the guitarist spoke about the album shortly after it was released with the High Plains Reader, a weekly newspaper based in his previous home base of Fargo. More recent takes on Harty's live performances have been published by local live musicologist Kiki Schueler, who reviewed two of his Cafà Montmartre shows here and here. Harty has several upcoming performances in Madison. The next show -- featuring Harty and fellow songwriter Dietrich Gosser -- will land in Cafà Montmartre at 9 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Harty's subsequent local show is also at the Momo, scheduled for 8 pm on Sunday, Oct. 29, where he will be opening for Natalia Zuckerman.
