MaeRae features three former members of NoahJohn - Stephen Burke, Peter Kaesburg and Lisa Hinzman. Their new album masters the art of moody heartland rock like no other Madison band since Marques Bovre and the Evil Twins. The opening song, "Match," hinges on dual tenor and bass guitar lines, while a sad violin meanders alongside. Lisa Hinzman puts feeling into every note she sings, turning her songs into stories. "Hit Reply" finds Hinzman reading e-mail messages left behind by a deceased friend. She wonders, "And if I hit reply, will it go to heaven?"
With nine songs that clock in under 28 minutes, MaeRae tricks us into saying the name of the album as the last song fades away.
