This London-based band melds rock, soul and blues into songs coated with disco-pop production sheen. The title track has a 1960s "wall of sound" feel that recalls the heyday of Phil Spector and the Ronettes. Tracks like "Don't Upset the Rhythm" languish in standard dance beats that do little to distinguish themselves.
Too bad, because the Noisettes have one tremendous asset, lead singer Shingai Shoniwa. Shoniwa was raised by a single mother from Zimbabwe. She grew up in a South London housing project. Today, she's one of the most elegant and graceful U.K. singers around. Her tall hair and engaging style make the Noisettes a formidable stage presence.
The Noisettes, it turns out, are better seen than heard.
