The indie film Madison hits the festival circuit next year, and local songwriter Robert J. has been tapped to sing lead vocals on the opening and closing songs. One of his own compositions, "Rewind," has been selected for the soundtrack. The film traces the fictional plight of an Iraq War vet who seeks emotional solace in Madison.
The local nonprofit group FoRCE (Foundation of Retaining Creative Energy) is starting a program for musicians and visual artists who need health insurance. FoRCE members can buy a limited-benefit health insurance policy for $49.63 per month. Information is available at www.madisonforce.org.
Rick Tvedt and Roy Elkins, organizers of the annual Madison Area Music Awards, have heard critics say their fund-raising efforts are inefficient. But two weeks ago at Huegel Elementary, no one complained when the two men presented a $300 check for instrument repairs. Tvedt and Elkins are also distributing a grant-request form to local music teachers. They say they've got $6,000 to award. Information is available at www.themamas.org.
The Madison Music Foundry is teaming with UW-Extension to offer a 10-week course in songwriting. The course is designed to help aspiring and professional songwriters in every genre develop more meaningful lyrics and more memorable melodies. The Foundry, a rehearsal and self-recording space for local musicians, will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Oct. 6 with an open-house that features live music and free beer.
