Sleepy Lesbos, Karsten Osterby's hard-to-classify local project, seems utterly mysterious on its new EP. Genre-wise, this recording falls somewhere between trippy electronic music and elegant folk. Mood-wise, it teeters between calmness and hysteria. Some vocals are Osterby's, and others come from guests, but all evoke the cracked yearning of Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart.
Osterby is more fickle when it comes to rhythm. "Artemis" has the fevered pace of a club dance, but "Transcend" slows down to showcase glimmering keyboards, samples of rainfall and spoken words rendered unintelligible by effects. Osterby's arpeggio-like melody patterns hold the songs together. "Naresuan" builds a marimba-like synth hook into a hazy chorus of instruments, reaching a pleasing balance between beautiful and bewildering.
