The Madison concert scene tends to simmer down for the holidays, when students head home and townies entertain relatives with games of charades rather than live music. However, some winter shows are worth leaving home for. Punks past and present will congregate on State Street Nov. 29, when Social Distortion hit the Orpheum, and Bon Iver will warm chilly bodies with hushed indie-folk melodies when they play a sold-out show at the venue Dec. 10. The High Noon Saloon will bubble with zaniness Jan. 4, when Camper Van Beethoven reprise classics such as "Take the Skinheads Bowling." Animal Collective's Avey Tare will treat fans to a solo show at the Majestic Dec. 6 as he unveils a new LP of freak-folk experiments and other delights.
