For most area college students, school's out for summer, but organizers of the fall concert lineup aren't taking any vacations. Bookers and promoters are as busy as ever, lining up shows for August, September and beyond. On Aug. 3, husband-and-wife duo Tennis visit the High Noon Saloon with Young & Old, their latest album of lo-fi surf-pop. Gene Ween is dead, according to the Ween's manager, Greg Frey, but thankfully, the man who created the persona is very much alive. He appears under his real name, Aaron Freeman, at the High Noon on Sept. 16, where he'll perform selections from a new solo LP, Marvelous Clouds.
Folk-pop six-piece the Head and the Heart is slated to charm tickers and craniums alike at the Orpheum Theatre on Sept. 28, though the theater's current woes (see Arts Beat, page 15) may complicate matters. Finally, Melvins Lite - a group composed of guitarist and vocalist King Buzzo (a.k.a. Melvins co-founder Buzz Osborne), drummer Dale Crover and Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn - will melt some faces at the High Noon on Sept. 20.
