Larkin' is playing at The Brink Lounge for St. Patrick's Day. The Daily Page queried the group about its plans for the holiday and all things Kelly green. Here's what band member Tom Blain had to say. What are your St. Patrick's Day plans? How is the St. Patrick's Day crowd different from those at other shows? What is your favorite St. Patrick's Day memory? Do you have any St. Patrick's Day traditions? How did you get started in Irish music? What do you think is the allure of bagpipers? Why are we so fascinated by kilts and plaid?
We will be performing at the Brink Lounge at 8 p.m. on March 17.
Mixed in with the regular St. Pat's crowd are folks who really enjoy traditional Irish music, and maybe don't go out all that often. We especially love playing for those people, and for people who follow the music all year.
Several years ago my family lived in rural Norway for half a year, and my wife and I played some Irish music at the tiny local school. Very little English was spoken, but the students and teachers recognized a couple of the melodies!
Playing music and celebrating the fact that our brand of folk music is accessible, active and evolving. We try to downplay the stereotypes.
I've been playing traditional music for many, many years, including Irish and Scottish stuff. I grew up listening to Scottish songs at home. A few years ago I was lucky enough to hook up with some like-minded musicians, and Larkin' was created.
I love the sound of bagpipes of all types. They give me a chill -- the good kind. However, I admit that the sound might not be for everyone.
