The more than two-year gap between the closing of MMoCA's old home and the construction of its new one has meant that one of its prized traditions, the Wisconsin Triennial, did not happen as it should have in 2005. The next show will take place in April or May 2007.
The Triennial is a competitive showcase for contemporary Wisconsin artists. As part of the selection process, the museum's curatorial team doesn't rely just on slides or digital images sent in by artists. The three-person team uses a divide-and-conquer strategy to make roughly 100 visits to artists' studios throughout the state.
"It's really challenging and time-consuming, but there are always some amazing surprises," says director Stephen Fleischman. "You're just struck by something that you had no idea existed."
