The latest music video by PHOX hit the web on April 23, and was quickly featured by Entertainment Weekly. The band's soulful folk-pop has already gained lots of attention in 2014, including recognition from NPR and The New York Times.
Partisan Records, the label they signed to in March, will release PHOX's self-titled album on June 24. To help promote the album and a summer tour announcement, the group released a video for the song "Slow Motion," which originally appeared on their 2013 video EP, Confetti. The tune has undergone a few tweaks since its original release, leading Entertainment Weekly to classify the band's sound as "neo-soul."
Directed by the group's guitarist and banjo player, Zach Johnson, the video emanates the feeling of a warm summer day. It features outdoor celebrations, bright colors and sweeping shots of the six-person band. Singer and songwriter Monica Martin's light, soulful voice floats through the video, complemented by a soothing clarinet solo and light whistling that serves as a bridge.
The intro to the video features Martin in the midst of a couch-based jam session, backed by the other five members of the group. As the song transitions to a slower pace, Martin appears alone, riding a bike down a Nashville backstreet and fixing her makeup in a naturally lit room. She is joined by the rest of the group for the final chorus. The larger group shots include a few dancers and a lot of confetti, raining glitter and bright colors -- more reminders that summer party season is on the way.
PHOX released "Slow Motion" as a single in early April, opening the promotional effort for what looks to be another big summer for the group.
With luck, PHOX's upcoming album will be as lovely as this song and its video. The band will play the High Noon Saloon on Thursday, August 7 and Friday, August 8; the latter show is already sold out.
