You may know The 39 Steps from the Hitchcock film, but this comedy/thriller hybrid pays homage to Hitch while gently playing with the conventions of the spy genre. There’s slapstick, romance, and four actors playing more than 100 parts in this production from Madison Theatre Guild! Shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday (except 2 p.m. on 10/7), and 2 p.m., Oct. 1.
media release: Madison Theatre Guild kicks off the 2023-2024 season with Patrick Barlow's adaptation of THE 39 STEPS at the Bartell Theatre on Friday September 22 and runs till Saturday October 7. Show is directed by Francisco Torres and produced by Patrick Stockland.
Take this fast-paced comedy that mixes a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, a dash of Monty Python and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable performance. The show hurtles a notorious fugitive and a spellbound blonde from a London music hall north by northwest to Scotland’s most remote highlands. Will they save Britain from a den of devious spies?
Filled with clever wordplay, slapstick humor, and a touch of romance, "The 39 Steps" is a delightful homage to both Hitchcock and the golden age of spy thrillers. The play's unique theatricality shines through as four actors skillfully portray over 100 characters, seamlessly transitioning between roles and creating a whirlwind of comedic chaos. The clever staging, imaginative use of props, and dynamic set design transport audiences from the Scottish moors to London's West End, immersing them in a world of suspense, adventure, and laughter.
This production is for all ages.
