This year, the weekly downtown Dane County Farmers' Market has transformed. Up until now, it's been running on an order-ahead model through each vendor, with drive-through pickups on Saturdays and Wednesdays. That's still operating (Wednesdays 3-6 pm, and Saturday from 7-9 am), but the market is introducing a walk-up component Saturdays only. From 9:30 am until 12:30 pm, spontaneity will once again rule, with patrons browsing and buying at stands for about 60 vendors. Carrots! Bok choy! Rhubarb! All on a whim! Park near the Coliseum or use the bike/ped entrance from Olin Avenue. Safety measures will be enforced. Extended through Nov. 21.

Oct. 20 update: The Dane County Farmers’ Market (DCFM) will now be open outdoors thru Saturday, November 21. The DCFM will operate both its Wednesday and Saturday Local Food Pick Ups and Saturday Walk-Up Farmers’ Market on Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center thru November 21.  Previously, the outdoor season was scheduled to end on November 4, but it has been extended!

“It is more important than ever for our community to have access to nourishing and delicious foods,” says Market Manager Sarah Elliott, “and it is a critical time to support local farmers and small food businesses. We are excited to extend the successful and safe vending models that we have built since the pandemic began.”

Both the Local Food Pick Ups and Saturday Farmers’ Market are popular ways for the greater Madison community to safely connect directly with family farmers and small food producers. There are three opportunities each week for customers to shop from the DCFM.

1. The Wednesday Local Food Pick Up: This low contact pre-order/drive-thru model runs from 3-6pm on Wednesdays and will continue through November 18, 2020.

2. The Saturday Local Food Pick Up: This low contact pre-order/drive-thru model runs from 7-9am on Saturdays and will continue through November 21, 2020.

3. The Saturday Walk-Up Farmers’ Market: Continuing through November 21, 2020, from 9:30am to 12:30pm, patrons can spontaneously shop from vendors at their stands. There is a strict Safe Shopper Code of Conduct and safety measures will be enforced.

The Dane County Farmers’ Market plans to continue to offer opportunities for farmers and customers to connect directly throughout the winter months. More details will be forthcoming.

“We are grateful for the Alliant Energy Center and Dane County as they continue to work with us to provide a temporary home while we are displaced from the Capitol Square,” says Market Manager Sarah Elliott. “As the pandemic continues to evolve, we know that things may change and that we must remain flexible; however, having a partner like the Alliant Energy Center throughout this crisis has been essential to our continued operations and support of our farmer members.”
