“Radio Daze,” takes the various genres of old radio and mercilessly mocks them. Among the many sketches to be presented are a spoof on soap operas entitled, “Life on the Cowl Farm,” which chronicles the continuing saga of freelance mortician, Elner Cowl, and her quest for happiness. Then there is the crime drama, spoofed here with the story of Ed Fenske, $2.00 Extortionist. There is even a spoof of children’s radio, the continuing adventures of “Poochie, The Wonder Dog,” the story of a lackadaisical hound and the venal family that owns him. Interspersed throughout the night will be commercials from the E.J. Tawdrey Co., purveyors of Tawdrey gifts for over a century, and mock news reports. All roles are being performed by talented, local actors, who have been in rehearsal for several weeks.
The Watertown Players was founded in 1988 by Bill Jannke originally to produce the annual holiday plays at the Octagon House museum in Watertown. In the late 1990s the company began to produce full-length musicals. For over 25 years the group travelled around the community, presenting shows here and there. However in the summer of 2014 the Players finally came home to roost when they were offered their own space in the Market Specialty Shopping Mall, 210 S. Water St., Watertown. Here they have established a 75-seat theater and have produced a string of successful shows, including “Hello Dolly,” “Love, Sex and the IRS,” and in August they will present “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.”
