press release: Fermat’s Last Theater’s Brecht Project continues with a workshop/staged reading of poems, songs and scenes with a theme A Voice for the Voiceless. Performances are Thursday and Friday, Feb 7 & 8, at 7:30 PM at the Arts + Literature Laboratory, 2021 Winnebago on Madison’s east side. Both performances are free.
Brecht was an explicitly political writer, and while his politics evolved over time, from the anarchic nature of the early Threepenny Opera to the agitprop works like The Mother to the more nuanced but still radical nature of mature works such as Mother Courage and Her Children and The Good Person of Szechwan, he always was exploring how those oppressed and excluded could have their stories told. This latest workshop will feature poems, both well known and obscure, songs from Threepenny Opera and Mother Courage, and scenes from the latter and The Good Person of Szechwan.
Ensemble members are Steffin Silvis, Jake Prine and Brette Olpin and musicians are Diana Wheeler (violin) and Angela McJunkin (cello). David Simmons will direct. Following the opening night show on Feb 7, UW Professor Sabine Gross will talk about the many women collaborators/lovers who were instrumental to Brecht’s work and life.
