All That Jazz
Arts + Literature Laboratory and Wisconsin Union Theater are putting together an impressive week-plus of events for the 2022 Madison Jazz Festival. It kicks off June 10 with Strollin' Capitol East, featuring free music at ALL, Dark Horse ArtBar, High Noon Saloon and Robinia Courtyard, at various times from 5-11:30 p.m. Of special note is the commemoration of Duke Ellington's residency at UW-Madison, featuring a presentation of rare Ellington music by Howard Landsman on June 11 (1:30 p.m., Sequoya Library, with live music also provided by Dave Stoler) and two concerts and a panel discussion on June 17 (5:30-10 p.m., Hamel Music Center). Also on the schedule: a trio led by Thaddeus Tukes, a literate, inventive vibraphonist whose poetic style has landed him in performance with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic as well as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (8 p.m., June 16, Cafe Coda); and the 25th anniversary tour by Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band (8 p.m., June 18, Shannon Hall). Find the full schedule and info on tickets at madisonjazzfestivalwi.org.
media release: It has been a tradition that the Madison Jazz Society has a free Year End Party each June, celebrating all that happened that year. Re-starting live concerts in April is a cause for celebration so the free party will happen again on Sunday, June 12. Because All That Jazz Big Band is donating their performance fee to the Society’s School Grant Fund, it was decided that this event will be a fund raising event for their School Grant Fund and School Residency program, as well as a concert full of music. The party will feature All That Jazz Big Band and the Paris Blues Trio and will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 2969 Cahill Main, Fitchburg.
MJS President Linda Marty Schmitz said, “Our grant and residency programs will continue after the MJS transition under the Society’s new leadership and we want to ensure those accounts are as healthy as possible. The Jazz Mall will be open throughout the party, from which attendees can purchase items, the sale of which benefits our School Grant Fund, and there will be baskets on the tables in which they can make donations for the funds, either designated or un-designated. Un-designated donations will be split evenly between the two funds.”
All That Jazz Big Band started in 1985 as a rehearsal band in a Middleton basement. With every dance or concert, ATJ proves what its members have learned in rehearsal – there is no better way to experience the Big Band sound than a live performance! ATJ has been a regular feature at the Madison Art Fair on the Square and Tunes at the Monona Terrace, has opened shows for Rockapella and Tom Wopat, and gained national exposure when they performed on the CBS Early Show. The band has an outreach program for the “next generation” of Jazz musicians.
Also performing on June 12 will be the Paris Blues Trio whose members are Al Hough, guitar; Larry Livingston, drummer and Jim Willett, bass. They sing as well as play and met at the Middleton Senior Center as part of a larger band, Middleton Jazz. They have been together since 2012 and took the name of Paris Blues because they originally played French pop tunes but now have migrated mostly to American standards and a mix of audience-friendly jazz, blues and rock.
This is a free event, with doors opening at noon. For everyone’s safety, it is hoped that those who attend MJS events are fully vaccinated and boosted and/or wear a mask at the events. Details can be found at www.madisonjazz.com or by calling 608-850-5400.
Formed in 1984, the Madison Jazz Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to encourage the performance of and education about jazz. In June 2023, its focus will be centered on the education portion of its mission under new leadership. It sponsors a school grant program that awards grants to Wisconsin schools to enhance their jazz education programs and a jazz school residency program that introduces students to traditional jazz.
