Ancora String Quartet
Grace Episcopal Church 116 W. Washington Ave., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
media release: Grace Presents is a free monthly concert series at historic Grace Episcopal Church on the Capitol Square.
This fall, the Ancora String Quartet will be joined by violist Melissa Snell, a DMA student at UW-Madison and a member of the Madison Symphony Orchestra.
Our program will consist of two works: Beethoven’s Op. 74 “Harp” quartet and Shostakovich’s sixth quartet, Op. 101. The Beethoven quartet, the nickname of which is derived from some arpeggiated pizzicato passages, is both imminently accessible and profound, and foreshadows the monumental late quartets. The Shostakovich quartet is surprisingly upbeat and chipper but also contains dark undertones.
Wes Luke and Robin Ryan, violins; Melissa Snell, viola; Benjamin Whitcomb, cello
