media release: The United Asian Consortium is holding an Asian-American Celebration Night on Friday, May 10 at Madison East High School, 2222 East Washington Avenue, 5:30-8pm. Families are invited to attend this free event and learn more about Asian culture. An Asian cuisine dinner is provided (limited), starting at 5:30pm in the school cafeteria area, no RSVP needed. Enjoy Asian inspired arts and crafts like creating Chinese lanterns, masks, photobooth and more! The entertainment showcase begins at 6:45pm and includes an Asian cultural fashion show, dancing and singing in the theater.
According to Mayder Lor, MSCR high school recreation specialist at East High School, “The theme of this year's Asian American Celebration Night is “Year of The Dragon.” The significance of this event is to highlight a variety of different Asian cultures around the world while also providing a learning experience for the community to engage through planned activities, performances and dinner! We hope that everyone can join us to celebrate Asians of all different backgrounds.” Lor oversees the MSCR Afterschool clubs including the United Asian Club.
The MSCR United Asian Clubs at East and La Follette High School alongside Sun Prairie East High School, West High School and Monona Grove High School’s Asian Clubs are taking the lead on organizing this family engagement night and resource fair. This special night is open to all people to connect and learn about other Asian cultures.
Isabelle Chang, the East High School Public Relations Officer for the United Asian Club, enjoys planning for this event because she likes seeing how all the pieces come together to make one final product. During the event, Isabelle likes seeing people of all ages from different backgrounds in the community come together to celebrate Asians from different cultures.
Lor is passionate about this celebration, her family is from Ban Tha Din Diang Tai, Laos. “I want our children to appreciate our Asian heritage and where their families came from and their struggles.”
She has personally raised funds to build a preschool with the help of the United Asian Consortium in 2018-2019 when they hosted the United Asian Consortium Showcase. (See Av Liab School Project 2019 video)
