media release: Canadian ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD released its highly anticipated psychedelic jazz album Talk Memory, out now. The release of the band's fifth studio album is also coupled with an accompanying video for "Love Proceeding," and follows singles "Signal From the Noise," and “Beside April”, composed in conjunction with legendary Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai and featuring iconic drummer/producer Karriem Riggins (J Dilla, Madlib). The black and white video directed by Jamal Burger portrays the bond between two brothers looking after themselves while their mom works late.
Talk Memory, the band's first album with XL Recordings in partnership with Innovative Leisure, features 9 new songs and includes musical contributions from Arthur Verocai, Karriem Riggins, Terrace Martin, Laraaji and acclaimed harpist Brandee Younger, who has worked with Moses Sumney and Thundercat. Sporting visuals from Virgil Abloh, whose design firm Alaska-Alaska™ designed the cover for Talk Memory, the album is an evolution focused on collaboration and the magic of improvised live performance. The band also recently performed at Virgil Abloh’s Met Gala afterparty where they jammed with Kid Cudi. Demonstrating emotional and poetic progress, the new album is an aural odyssey and a heartfelt expression of joy for the music and community the band considers itself lucky to inhabit.
Of the album, BBNG says: "It took a year or two of just living life to get to the place where the creative process was exciting again and once we actually went in to the studio it was the most concise recording and writing process we’ve ever had. We hope that the improvised studio performances bring the listener closer to our live experience."
In support of the album's release, BADBADNOTGOOD will embark on a run of tour dates in North America, Canada and Europe all set to take place in 2021 and 2022. Tickets are on sale now at badbadnotgood.com.
Additionally, BBNG is set to put out the third issue of The Memory Catalogue, a series of world-building newsletters featuring exclusive content (sheet music, illustrated artwork, unseen photos, etc.) that fold out into a poster. Issue 3 allows fans to peek behind the curtain of the BBNG universe. All three issues of The Memory Catalogue are available as a bundle with pre-orders via the XL webstore as well as at select indie record shops and locations such as Stussy, Noah, Psychic Wines, and more.
Opening:
Montreal-based, St. Vincent-born artist Skiifall shares a new single "Bloodclarrt Business" via XL Recordings. The song arrives alongside a Guillaume Landry-directed video that shows Skiifall performing the track over a series of greyscaled scenes where he's joined by close affiliates in his hometown neighborhood and was also debuted with a live version on A COLORS SHOW earlier this month. The Yama//Soto and Joseph L'etranger-produced single follows Skiifall's debut EP WOIIYOIE TAPES Vol. 1 released last summer including songs "My Gully," and "Bagga Yute," continuing the emerging artist's catalog that has explored various global sounds. Next month, Skiifall will be hitting the road with Canadian jazz ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD for their North American "Talk Memory" tour dates following their recent collaboration "Break of Dawn."
With his 2020 debut single "Ting Tun Up," a track that The FADER called "one great debut single," Skiifall firmly marked his place on the global music stage. He followed that single up with "Ting Tun Up, Pt. II" which The FADER named the 2nd best song of 2021, and "Bentayga Dust," dealing with the duality between peace and discord to put the potency in Skiifall’s singular style on display.
Skiifall is rapidly consolidating his reputation as one of global hip hop’s most disruptive burgeoning forces. As inspired by the bashment of his St. Vincent homeland as he is the postmodern Atlanta icon Young Thug, Skiifall’s multifaceted output is representative of a musical DNA that crosses cultural boundaries.
Listen to "Bloodclarrt Business" and stay tuned for more from Skiifall coming soon.
