Tenor saxophone fans should be on high alert about this Tone Madison GateSound concert by avant-garde quartet Battle Trance, which consists entirely of tenor saxes. Their challenging new album-length composition “Blade of Love” should make for a fascinating listening and viewing experience — especially for fellow players trying to figure out just how they are getting some of these sounds from their instruments. The New York-based ensemble includes former Madisonian Patrick Breiner (Vartan Mamigonian, New Breed Quintet). With Randal Bravery.
press release: Tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance is proud to announce their sophomore album Blade of Love, which was released digitally and on CD August 26 on New Amsterdam Records, with a vinyl edition released by NNA Tapes. The follow-up to their widely acclaimed debut Palace of Wind (2014), Blade of Love is an elemental composition that aims to fulfill the tenor saxophone's expansive potential as an ensemble instrument. Working within the intimate intersection of the human body/breath and the saxophone, Blade of Love is a spiritual and enigmatic work with a deep emotional resonance.
