The loss of pollinator species is one of the most pressing issues in conservation biology. You’ve probably read about the spread of white nose syndrome in bats and the collapse of honeybee colonies, but there are dozens of other pollinator species that are also declining in number. The loss of these species would have far-reaching economic and ecological impacts; animal pollinators contribute about $35 billion per year to the US economy and pollinate almost 90% of plants.

Wild pollinators, especially invertebrates, tend to be overlooked and understudied, and monitoring projects could provide valuable information on their status and distribution. WSCB is launching a project to assess pollinator diversity here in Madison, Wisconsin. We’ll be using citizen science to collect valuable data on pollinator communities and to promote conservation action, right here in our own backyards.

We need your help! To kick off our summer monitoring season, we are hosting Bee Fest 2015! on June 14th from 10am-3pm at the UW Arboretum. We’ll be holding informational sessions, hands-on workshops, and a chance to get outdoors and see these fascinating species up close. Come celebrate Wisconsin’s native pollinators with us!
