Artists with disabilities from around the state ages 5 and up will be awarded for their work in both visual art and poetry in four categories: Child (ages 5-10), Youth (ages 11-15), Young Adult (ages 16-21), and Adult (ages 22 and up). Join us in celebrating our 2021 Creative Power award winning artists with disabilities. https://www.facebook.com/events/2766318603698580
Each year, ARTS for ALL Wisconsin invites submissions of artwork from Wisconsin residents with disabilities and receives hundreds of submissions in a wide variety of media. With a commitment to protecting the community from COVID-19 while honoring and celebrating artists with disabilities, the AFA Call for Art galleries are exclusively online at www.artsforallwi.org/programs/
All submissions are juried by arts professionals who look for creativity, originality, and craftsmanship in selecting artworks to be added to CREATIVE POWER, the ARTS for ALL Wisconsin Traveling Exhibition. The awards celebration on May 15 will go out live on Facebook at 1pm CST, and will be available as a recording on Facebook and YouTube shortly thereafter. The celebration will be captioned and interpreted in American Sign Language.
This year AFA added a poetry category for all ages judged by Madison Poet Laureate, Angie Trudell Vasquez. She awarded two youth poems and four adult poems. “I really enjoy putting children out there, publishing their poems and encouraging them,” she said. “When I was a young writer, if someone had said, ‘this is good, keep writing,’ it would have meant so much.”
At 72, Marleah Grinnell of Madison is one of the oldest winners of a Creative Power Award. “It feels like now I might really be an artist, not just someone sloshing paint on a canvas,” she said. “I never thought I’d be an award-winning artist. Never in my life.”
