CampHERO
media release: CampHERO, a popular summer experience designed to introduce K-12th grade girls to careers in police, fire and EMS, has added sessions to accommodate more girls AND is looking for volunteers.
CampHERO sessions run from July 15 – 26 and August 5 – 9, 2024 and are offered by age. Volunteer opportunities and shifts are greatly varied. Check out CampHERO4girls.org for details including camper registration links and the volunteer application.
“We want girls to see themselves as police officers, firefighters and EMTs, and what better way than to let them try it!” said Jen Roman, incident commander/founder, “We are extremely excited to offer this amazing opportunity to even more girls and at the same time need more volunteers to support our efforts.”
Nationwide only 29.5% of paramedic, 14.4% of police and 3.9% of firefighters are women (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Without active intervention those numbers are unlikely to change. CampHERO is an effort to bridge the gap by helping girls to discover their abilities and interests, connect with mentors and be inspired to take action.
CampHERO is open to any girl entering Kindergarten through recent high-school graduates. Financial aid is available. Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland Council is supported by Madison College and local police, fire and EMS departments to offer this incredible program.
Volunteers from all walks of life are encouraged to apply! While some jobs require expertise in the protective services, many do not. “There really is something for everyone” said Bernadette Galvez, CampHERO’s dispatcher and leadership team member. “It’s a great experience for the volunteers too! Come join us!”
