Character Design & World Building
press release: Introducing Rodney Lambright II as he kicks off his January-February residency Unwanted Sympathy with the Bubbler at Central Library! Rodney is an illustrator, animator, and writer who uses animation and cartoons as a vehicle to tell honest narratives. His work explores the depths of individual's perceptions, questioning binary thinking and investigating gray areas of life.
Growing up on Cartoon Network's cartoons, anime series on Toonami, and Adult Swim sparked his mind at a young age and continues to feed his passion around watching and creating cartoons. The world of cartoons presents itself as a place of endless possibilities to stretch reality beyond its limitation, which Rodney enjoys to play with within his works.
His residency Unwanted Sympathy is about interpersonal investigation of psychological traumas, embedded within the unconscious mind - the realities we create to cope with pain, the ways we express emotion, and our own personal perceptions. Unwanted Sympathy will focus on honing that energy to develop unique stories within the mediums of comics and animation.
Participants will experience surreal cartoons and anime tv shows/films that transport them beyond their own reality - to a place that only cartoons can reach. Then they'll breakdown the different elements of comics and animation by learning how they are made, including world building, narrative creation, character design, storyboarding, medium exploration, and much more.
