“This series of work began in San Miguel de Allende Mexico when I saw some of tiles made by the Japanese Ceramicist, Jun Kaneko at a studio tour. They rocked my world. I was so stunned I actually fell down in the street after I left the house of the collector. I could not get them out of my mind. I went home and began working on a piece, “First and Last.” On a return trip I was able to capture some pictures of the tiles on my phone. I worked the rest of the winter on this series, making fabric and going mad for dots and dashes. The marks are made with corks and brushes: stamping with bleach or thickened dye, as well as resists from potato sugar, cassava paste, and plain white flour. My goal for the year was to make 3 quilts I would be willing to enter into Quilt National (the Academy Awards for art quilts) and although I did not get into that show I spent a year filled with passion and vigor producing this body of work all of which began as a bolt of white cloth.” –Cherie St. Cyr
