The Chieftains began their career in 1963 and continue to be one of the most recognized Irish traditional bands. Their name comes from Death of a Chieftain by Irish poet John Montague. Current members include Paddy Moloney, Kevin Conneff, and Matt Molloy. They will be accompanied by drum and pipes, dancers, a choir and, perhaps, another surprise or two.
Known for reinventing the preconceptions of traditional Irish music, the band has made an impact in the music industry with six Grammy awards and eighteen nominations. They are honored as cultural ambassadors of Ireland. Accomplishments include being the first Western musicians to perform on the Great Wall of China, performing for Pope John Paull II’s visit to Ireland, and being the first ensemble to perform a concert in the Capitol Building in Washington DC. They were awarded the inaugural National Concert Hall Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala event in Philadelphia hosted by The American Ireland Fund.
2012 marked their 50th anniversary and the release of their commemorative album, Voice of Ages. Modern music artists, such as Bon Iver and The Decemberists, were collaborators, melding together generations of versatile music tastes.
The concert is presented by the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Performing Arts. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Media sponsor is WORT, 89.9 FM.
