RSVP for Clean Mud, Clear Water
Remember those nasty PCBs that gave the Fox River a bad name? Learn how they're being cleaned up, making a huge difference for fish, wildlife and people. But while that battle is being won, another one is underway, this one against polluted runoff from farming that turns the river green in the summer.
Our trip, in partnership with the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway, will start in Green Bay with a tour of the facility removing the long-contentious (and toxic) PCBs from the sediments of the Fox River, deposited decades ago by the many paper mills on the river. We'll learn what it takes to remove toxins from mud, where they go once they're removed – and how it all matters to the river.
Then we'll make a short car trip to De Pere, where we'll board the river boat River Tyme, operated by Fox River Tours. We will travel upstream on the Fox River to Little Rapids, and back again to De Pere. While underway we'll enjoy lunch (and a cash bar) and we'll learn about efforts going on to reduce the latest pollutant to harm the river. Though phosphorus isn't toxic like the PCBs of old, it still damages the river by causing algae blooms. Bill Hafs, director of environmental programs for NEW Water, will explain how the phosphorus got there, what can be done to get it out – and how it all matters to the river and Lake Michigan.
Must wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toed shoes.
Lunch will be provided.
Advance registration required.
