media release: Colin Hay has released “A Man Without A Name,” the third and final single from his upcoming album Now And The Evermore, out this Friday, March 18 via Lazy Eye/Compass Records. The track follows previous singles “Love Is Everywhere” and the title track, which features a guest appearance from Ringo Starr on drums.
In an interview with Hay, Forbes stated, “The joyful rootsy rocker, an incredibly festive track, was inspired by the idea of Elvis Presley's ghost,” adding that the “superb new album is an interesting one thematically as it finds the gifted singer/songwriter reflecting on his past.”
“It was really just an idea I had whenever I played the little musical idea that I had initially, which was just like going from a major chord to a sixth,” says Hay on the song’s origins. “It just reminded me of Elvis. For some reason, I kept thinking about Elvis, but then I just had the idea of it being about Elvis as a ghost who is wandering around and knowing that he was very, very powerful and iconic, but wasn't quite sure of all the details. I quite like that idea. And I think with a lot of songs, you put things out there and people travel down little different roads that the song takes them to. So it's quite a vague idea that song in particular, it's not about anything specific, it's just like little ideas that perhaps people can make of it what they will.”
In the nearly 40 years since he took home the GRAMMY for Best New Artist with seminal Aussie hitmakers Men At Work, Colin Hay has established himself as one of his generation’s most hardworking and reliable craftsmen. Rolling Stone praised his “witty, hooky pop” tunes; NPR’s World Café lauded his “distinctive voice;” actor/director Zach Braff featured his music in the GRAMMY-winning Garden State soundtrack and invited him to appear on Scrubs; and late night hosts from David Letterman and Craig Ferguson to Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have all welcomed him for performances.
The latest example of Hay’s work resurfacing to the mainstream is the recent remix of Men At Work’s “Down Under” by Australian EDM producer Luude. The remix is currently viral on TikTok and has racked up over 91.4 million streams across platforms.
Hay was recently featured by Salon, Stereogum, and was a guest on Office Hours w/ Tim Heidecker where he performed the album’s title track, as well as a cover of The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset” with Tim and co-hosts backing him up (the full episode is available to watch through the Office Hours Live Patreon).
The album has been further praised by Ultimate Classic Rock, BrooklynVegan, ABC Audio News, Rock Cellar Magazine, WFPK, Best Classic Bands, antiMusic, among others.
In support of the album, Hay will embark on an extensive US tour which starts tonight at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles. He’ll also join up as part of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band for a run of dates in June. See list of tour dates below, and for the full itinerary, visit his website: https://www.colinhay.com/tour/
