Compensation: A Liturgy of Fact

On April 26, 1986, reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine ruptured, releasing radioactive fallout over a wide area across Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. The disaster resulted in widespread radiation exposure, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, contamination of soil and water, and a devastating impact on local wildlife ecology. The consequences of the disaster are still felt in the area to this day.

On the thirtieth anniversary of this tragedy, please join us for a staged reading of Compensation: A Liturgy of Fact (1987), which explores the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. Based on accounts of Chernobyl survivors and cleanup workers, the play was written by Sergei Kurginian and translated by Carolyn Kelson with Alex and Helen Prokhorov. This staged reading is directed by Manon van de Water and features the students of Slavic 900/Theatre 911: Contemporary Russian Theatre.
