Conversación de la Comunidad
Lakeview Library 2845 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, Wisconsin 53704
press release: On Thursday, August 4th, Rep. Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) will host a community conversation on immigration and what role the government and our local communities should play.
“For too long, people in our community have been hidden in the shadows. These are our friends and neighbors. They go to school with us, work with us, and interact with us on a daily basis. We, at the state level of government, can have a positive impact on this debate and need to act accordingly. I believe the first step in this process is simply to listen. We must listen to fully comprehend life experiences that we have not had to endure. Only then can we discuss policies that are reflective of a common understanding.
“The issues surrounding immigration should be based on our shared values, not fear or intolerance. New Americans who desire to be citizens should be welcomed and helped through the process rather than blocked by real or metaphorical walls.
“I am hopeful that this community conversation will allow people to share their stories, and provide a platform for those in our community wishing to speak and engage with local leaders.”
