Heavy Looks
Among a busy slate of exciting release shows by local bands in October, this one stands out by celebrating the first new CDs in seven years for two long-running favorites. Heavy Looks started working on a new album in 2018, and after a pandemic pause have persevered to release Apathy, which delivers the group's patented wallop of hooks and heart. Cribshitter's latest is Goin' Soft, a title with appropriately multiple meanings when descriptive of the music included. From their 2020 viral hit (sorry) “COVID Cove” to lead single “Sausalito Sunset,” Cali folk and yacht rock will never be the same.
$10.

This is the single from our upcoming album Goin' Soft, out Oct 7, the first full-length emanation from the house of Cribshitter for seven years.
Heavy Looks, veteran rockers in the Madison scene, are also excited to announce their first physical album in seven years, Apathy. The two bands co-host a CD release show at the Crystal Corner on Saturday, October 22.
Originally recorded at Williamson Magnetic Recording Company in 2018, the album Apathy wouldn’t see the light of day until 2022. After a sequence of unfortunate events and timing, including a world-wide pandemic, the band halted the project indefinitely. As COVID restrictions eased up, the band reconvened to finish the project they started five years ago. The result is a seven-song album steeped in '90s-esque vocal harmonies, sharp drum hits, strong guitar lines, and cutting lyrics.
Heavy Looks, named after a Romeo and Juliet quote, connect their lyrics with the same forlorn feelings as the famous Shakespeare play evokes – feelings of love, feelings of loss, and feeling stuck in a mundane existence. By contrast, the melodies and rhythms conjure an optimistic outlook with hook-laden guitar lines and jaunty drumbeats. Melding Dirk's pop sensibilities and bright guitar with Roz's raw vocals and grunge riffs, they form a unique flavor of indie rock that packs heat.
In 2014, the band released their debut EP, Senses Growing Dull, and in December 2015, the band released their first full-length album, Waste It Right. Heavy Looks quickly made their presence known in the Madison music scene. They have shared stages with national acts including Curtis Harding, Gin Blossoms, Screaming Females, Slothrust, Tacocat, Summer Cannibals, Sweet Spirit, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, and Bad Hats. Recently, they opened for the national touring Louisiana soul-rock band, Seratones, at the Shitty Barn in Spring Green, Wisconsin. It was their first full show since February 2020, and they performed their new album, Apathy, for a sold-out audience.
