press release: A Room of One's Own presents a night of poetry with Midwestern poets Crystal Stone and Patience Young!
Crystal Stone grew up in southeastern PA. She joined Teach for America in Jackson, MS before starting her MFA at Iowa State University. Her poetry has previously appeared or is forthcoming in Poetry Daily, SWWIM, PHEMME, Better than Starbucks, peculiar, Sport Literate, Collective Unrest, Driftwood Press, New Verse News, Occulum, and Anomaly, among other publications. She gave a TEDx talk "The Transformative Power of Poetry," the first week of April, and her first collection of poetry, Knock-Off Monarch (Dawn Valley Press), was just released on Amazon in December of 2018.
Patience Young is a Detroit-bred writer with equal parts dirt and grease under her fingernails. She juxtaposes the simple magic of everyday life with the grief we each carry for our suffering. Rooted in radical vulnerability, her message is one of hope and a fierce belief in the good of us all. Patience believes poetry is a practice in causal non-sequitur, and that if she keeps spinning the combination lock it might open. It's OK if it doesn't; its fun to play with.
