What happens when one of the most important curators of photography retires and becomes himself a photographer? What does he photograph? What do the images look like? Why does he make them? Join us Thursday as we welcome David Travis from Chicago, our guest photographer for the 2016 PhotoMidwest Festival. The exhibit is titled “Passersby” and chronicles the passing parade of activity on a Chicago lakefront jogging path. Travis is the retired Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. He now teaches photography at Columbia College. The reception and artist’s talk begins at 7 pm onOctober 6.
Travis will participate in our Focus Weekend as well. On Saturday morning at 11am he’ll give a talk entitled “We’re All In This Together: Learning from my students, photographers, and our medium.” In the afternoon at 2:30pm he’ll be part of a panel discussion moderated by local photo historian and critic James Rhem with photo curators Barbara Tannenbaum from the Cleveland Art Museum and Andy Kraushaar from the State Historical Society of
Wisconsin called “More than Gatekeepers.” All of these events will be at the Pyle Center on Langdon Street. Register for theSaturday and Sunday talks at Focus Weekend Talks
