As it turns out, the return of Jazz at Five to its traditional home at the top of State Street was short-lived. However, this time the summer concert series moved just a couple blocks counterclockwise on the Square, to the South Hamilton Street corner. Concerts begin with a youth band at 4 p.m. (just added for Sept. 4 is the Pathfinder Quartet), and the final week features the DB Orchestra and All That Jazz Big Band.
Jazz at Five series, 4-8 pm Wednesdays, 8/7-9/4, Capitol Square-South Hamilton. Free.
media release: Jazz at Five’s Summer Performance Series is moving to the Capitol Grounds! After talking with the city and construction team for the new History Center, Jazz at Five has decided that it would be best for us to find a new downtown location while trying to stay as close to our original site as possible.
The 2024 Jazz at Five Performance Series will be on the South Hamilton side of the Capitol Square. Experience the magic of live music against the backdrop of our beautiful Capitol. From young talents to seasoned local acts, our lineup promises something for everyone.
Food, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages vendors will be on-site, so come hungry and thirsty! Feel free to bring a picnic blanket and settle in on the Capitol Grounds for a relaxing evening downtown.
Lively, loud, and local, the DB Orchestra is one of the hottest bands in Madison. Led by Andy Kerber, this group combines the nuanced harmonies of a Doo-Wop group, the intensity of a marching band, and the flair of great jazz ensembles of yesteryear. The DBO sets the stage for an infectiously fun and uniquely electric live performance. Expect to hear everything from timeless swinging hits from the1930s and ’40s, rock ‘n’ roll classics, show tune medleys, and even some tracks on the radio today. With a roster of nearly 20 musicians, the hot horns, smooth saxes, and driving drums of the DB Orchestra will keep your head humming and toes tapping long after the show’s over.
All That Jazz Big Band has been a Wisconsin and Illinois event favorite for over 35 years. This traditional big band has been featured at the Madison Art Fair on the Square, Stoughton Opera House, Al Ringling Theatre, the Monroe Performing Arts Center, and even did a live performance on the nationally televised CBS Early Show.
All That Jazz is also a regular at a variety of area festivals, school concerts, and summer concert series. Hear stirring renditions of classic dance tunes, jazz standards as interpreted by modern arrangers, and new jazz compositions.
Under the direction of Mount Horeb trumpeter, Paul Heinecke, the band is a great mix of people from diverse backgrounds – teachers, doctors, service reps, engineers, and more, who range in age from their late 20s to late70s. These musicians gather regularly to perfect and promote jazz – an original American art form!
