press release: The Rape Crisis Center was surprised with a phone call from one dedicated teenager this week. A fundraiser in a week connected to #GivingTuesday and the spirit of giving to local non-profits is not surprising. That this one is organized by a teenager and happening at Memorial High School this Friday? Now, that’s something special.
This Friday from 7pm – 9:30pm at the Memorial High School Auditorium, the all-ages show features sox bands coming together for the Rape Crisis Center fundraiser. $5 admission gets you a chance to see a range of music from a cappella to pop, punk, metal, indie – it’s all there! Bands include: Dead Silence, Midnight Voices, Name Redacted, Take the King, Crown, and Red Velvet Rope
17-year-old Memorial High School senior Jazmyne Navar is interested in the work the Rape Crisis Center does — “I am thinking about this kind of work as a career, and I just wanted to help,” she said. This drew her to the idea of a fundraising concert, and all on her own she made it happen: from getting the space, to booking the bands, to arranging the donation with the Rape Crisis Center. Erin Thornley-Parisi, Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center says, “It’s always wonderful when we find a young person who connects with our mission of hope, help, and healing. This is such a great way to let the students of Memorial and other area high schools know about us – from our helpline to self-defense training to our youth board, the “Game Changers” – we know that reaching our youth through prevention education opportunities is a great way to help stop sexual assault.”
