The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society (MHAHS) invites all young Indiana Jones hopefuls to an outdoor archaeology workshop to be held at the future site of the Heritage Center, 106 South Second Street (across from the Grumpy Troll Brew Pub), on Saturday, July 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m.
Museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to sign in “Dig It!” participants and help them investigate simulated archaeology sites. Archaeologists-for-the-day will have the opportunity to “excavate sites,” then formulate a hypothesis about the artifacts they find and what they can tell us about people and events of the past.
There will also be learning stations for further exploration of the science of archaeology and an informational booth provided by the Friends of Donald Park will share archeological finds and the stories they tell us from this popular nearby outdoor destination.
Finally, MHAHS is pleased to announce that the event will boast a special guest—an experienced flint knapper, who will be on hand to demonstrate the art of crafting stone tools, a common component of many aboriginal archaeological sites.
All activities will be geared towards children ages five to twelve. Reservations are not necessary, with all activities and materials made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To accommodate expected high traffic associated with Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Art Fair, to be held the same weekend, the Mount Horeb Area Museum will have special extended hours on Saturday, July 18 of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. So make time after visiting the “Dig It!” site to stop by the Museum and its eclectic Gift Shop.
