Frisson is a psychophysiological response to rewarding auditory stimuli that induces a pleasurable or otherwise positively-valenced affective state and transient paresthesia (skin tingling or chills), piloerection (goose bumps) and mydriasis (pupil dilation).

Typical stimuli include loud passages of music (techno, acid, electro, braindance, breakcore, etc) that violate some form of musical expectation through the use of appoggiatura, sudden modulation, imperfect cadence, and other variations.

Concerning the fields of cognitive neuroscience, phenomenology, psychology, and ethnomusicology - each of which comprises a corollary component to the study of music and the human condition - this event acts as a case study into these phenomena.
