Join us for this year's Festa Junina, GANDWANA-style. Festa Junina (June Party), is a traditional northern Brazilian holiday celebrating rural life and customs.
Don’t miss the debut performance of Immigré, an exciting new Madison-based Afrobeat band, at Festival Junina, Thursday, June 11, at the High Noon Saloon. This annual music festival marks the traditional northern Brazilian holiday, and this year's festivities emphasize the connection of Brazilian music and dance to their African roots. Immigré hits the stage at 10 pm.
Although this is their first performance as Immigré, these musicians are no strangers to Madison audiences. Immigré was founded in the fall of 2014 by members of the Afrofunkstars, who have developed their musical chemistry as Tani Diakite’s backing band over the past five years. The original crew added an all-star horn section, expanding their sound into new, yet familiar, territory. Pulsing bass notes, propulsive drum rhythms, searing horn riffs, dynamic keyboard licks, raging djembe solos and soulful guitar phrases pull together to create a sound like Madison has never heard before.
The lineup consists of:
Matt Manske (No Name String Band): guitar
Paddy Cassidy (WADOMA): percussion
Peter Baggenstoss (The Big Payback): keyboards
Tim Patterson (Handphibians): drumset
Ryan Lammey (Afrofunkstars): bass
Mike Kelly (Red Rose): guitar
Pete Ross (The Jimmys): alto saxophone
Tony Barba (Youngblood Brass Band): tenor saxophone
Jamie Kember (The Big Payback): trombone
Frank Younger (Dub Foundation): baritone saxophone
Al Piela (Eastman School of Music): trumpet
The chemistry and talent of the group is reflected in the fun and danceable music which is infused with diverse influences including Afrobeat, Funk, Jazz, Wassoulou, and traditional West African rhythms.
Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate Immigre's first performance, and support other Diaspora sounds in our community at Festa Junina Thursday June 11 at the High Noon Saloon! Warm up those hips, and bring your dancing shoes!
